Using ICN

Testing the ICN Feature

  1. Make sure that the ICN icon is in the system tray.

  2. Connect your modem to the Internet.

  3. Call the phone number that your computer is connected to, from another line, while your ICN icon is in the system tray. The ICN software window should open to notify you of the incoming call. Caller ID information may also be displayed if the service is active on your modem line.

If the test fails, refer to the Troubleshooting section.

Using the ICN Feature

In the following procedure, the assumption is that you have a V.92 connection to the Internet, and that the Call Waiting service is active on your telephone line. The availability of Caller ID is irrelevant here, since this particular service will only provide you with additional information on the incoming call and will not alter the procedure.

Accepting a Call

Once the ICN window has opened, you have a limited amount of time (approximately 14 seconds) to decide whether or not to take the incoming call before ICN will drop the call and return to your internet connection. A countdown will be displayed in the ICN window.

If you are connecting to a server that supports V.92:

  1. You will receive a message informing you of an incoming call.
In addition, if you subscribe to Caller ID service, the number of the incoming call will display.

  2. Click Accept to accept the call, or Ignore to ignore the call.

  3. If you accept the call, the message "Please wait while connection is being established" will be displayed.

  1. The message "You can take your second call" will be displayed, and you will have four seconds to pick up your handset.
  1. A message will appear notifying you of the length of time that the provider's system will wait on hold before the data connection is terminated.

  2. You can then return to the connection when the call is completed without losing the connection.

If you are connecting to a server that does not support V.92:

  1. You will receive a message informing you of an incoming call.
In addition, if you subscribe to Caller ID service, the number of the incoming call will display.

  2. Click Accept to accept the call, or Ignore to ignore the call. When you accept the call, your data connection will be terminated.

  3. The message "Please wait while connection is being established" will be displayed.

  1. The message "You can take your second call" will be displayed, and you will have four seconds to pick up your handset.

Note: If you pick up your phone too late, the incoming call will be dropped. If you pick up your handset before pressing the Accept button, your line will not switch to the incoming call.

Switching Back to Your Internet Connection

Your ISP will terminate your Internet connection if you have not switched back to it within the determined length of time. The ICN window will display a countdown of the remaining time before terminating your Internet connection.

To continue your phone conversation and drop your Internet connection:

  1. Click the Drop button and continue with your voice call; your Internet connection will be dropped.

  2. You will recieve a message that you have been disconnected from the Internet. Follow your regular dial-up routine to reestablish an Internet connection.

Note: If you talk until the timeout elapses, the Internet connection will automatically be dropped, displaying the following warning:

To return to your Internet connection:

  1. Press the Back button on ICN.

  2. The message "Hang up your phone now" will appear and you will have four seconds to hang up your handset, without disturbing your Internet connection.

  3. The message "Please wait while reconnection with your ISP is being established" will appear on the ICN display.

  4. The message displayed will close and you should be back online.

Note: Be sure to click the Back button before hanging up your phone, and during the time when "Hang up your phone now!" is displayed; otherwise, your modem will not be able to switch back to the Internet.
